Strandja region

Strandja region is a fairy tale. It is a realm of quiet serenity and natural beauty. The rich cultural and historical heritage as well as the marvelous nature of the region offer wonderful opportunities for development of mountain, ecological and cultural tourism.


There is situated the oldest Bulgarian protected area of Silkosia. It is the only place in Europe where grows periwinkle - the symbol of Strandja mountain. Many other threaten with extinction and protected animal and plant species live in the reserve and the natural park of Strandja. There are numerous picturesque places, such as Chuchurinkata on the bank of Veleka river, where you can relax and enjoy a recreation of full value.


In the region there have been preserved many monuments of the Thracian culture. In the highest place of the mountain called Kamenska Barchina is situated a Thracian rock sanctuary dedicated to Helios - god of sun. It dates back to 1000 - 1500 year B.C.


A sight of interest in the region are the monasteries of Zabernovski 'St. Petka' and Golimobukovski 'St. Petka'.


It is worth visiting the picturesque settlements in the region such as Brashlian, Bulgari, Fakia, Momina tsarkva, Zvezdets, Gramatikovo and many others that have preserved the Bulgarian traditions culture and history. The village of Bulgari is the only place where people still play fire dances. The biggest settlement there is the town of Malko Turnovo.
